Discipline Philosophy

All segments of our society require some standards which all members of that society are expected to follow and maintain. So that the rights of classmates and others are not infringed upon, the following rules are formed for all to follow. With rights go responsibilities. The student's responsibility lies in following these guidelines.

In addition to these rules that follow, staff will have specific policies and regulations of which students will be informed in writing. The specific policies and regulations of the staff will be posted in their classrooms. Students are to follow the school and classroom rules and regulations.

Student Guidelines

Cooperation with School Personnel

Students must obey the lawful instruction of all school district personnel.

Disciplining, Suspending, or Expelling from Attendance

All actions are subject to procedural due process rights as required by state law and school board policy. Copies of these rights are available upon request. Any student who has received suspension (including in-school suspension) is not permitted to participate in or attend any school activity during the suspension period.

Dress and Appearance

Students will dress in a manner that reflects an appropriate attitude toward the seriousness of obtaining an education. Dress and appearance must not present health or safety problems or cause disruption on campus or at school sponsored activities. The district-wide dress code is a minimum standard of appropriate dress. Students in violation of the dress code will be required to change clothes or face disciplinary sanctions.

Fighting

As a general rule, when two students are in a fight, either verbal or physical, fault can be found on both sides. Therefore, both students may receive short-term suspension (unless it can be proven that one party was clearly at fault). Students should attempt to work out differences with the assistance of peer mediation or the school counselor.

Food

All food and beverage must be confined to the student cafeteria.

Hall Passes

A student out of class for any reason must have a pass.

Off-Campus Events

Students at school-sponsored, off-campus events shall be governed by school district rules and regulations and are subject to the authority of school district personnel.

Personal Property

The following items can be confiscated and held for the school year if brought on campus: Walkmen, CD players, water guns, radios, tape decks, headphones, recorders, pagers/beepers, cellular phones, skateboards, rollerblades, weapons of any kind, cigarettes, matches, any tobacco/drug paraphernalia, or clothing in violation of the dress code.

Refusal to Identify Self

All persons are expected, upon request, to identify themselves to school personnel in the school building, on the campus or at school-sponsored events.

Undue Affection

Students should show respect for each other by not demonstrating physical affection on the school campus or at school-sponsored events.

Use of Tobacco

Tahoma School District is a "tobaccoless" district. Therefore, students are subject to disciplinary measures for possession, and/or use of tobacco products. This includes smoking or chewing a product, holding a product, and/or being in the vicinity of a burning tobacco product or fresh pile of chew and no one present will claim to it.

Possible Disciplinary Actions

A fair and consistent discipline plan must also provide degrees of flexibility for the consideration of individuals involved. The considerations include: 1) intent and severity of the act, 2) the number of previous acts by the parties involved, 3) prior disciplinary action taken by the parties involved, 4) previous parent involvement and input.

Progressive and corrective disciplinary action may involve any of the following actions:

Informal Warning: An administrator or staff member will talk with the student explaining the expectations for future situations.

Student Conferences and/or Warning: A formal conference is held between the student and staff member to discuss the behavior, expectations and consequences of future situations.

Parent Involvement: Parent/guardian is notified by telephone, personal contact or letter. A conference may be conducted between the student, his/her parent/guardian, and teachers.
