Integrated Math

The Tahoma School district uses an integrated math curriculum, K-10.  This curriculum aligns with the state math standards as outline in the Mathematics Essential Learning Requirements.  These standards require that students solve real world math problems, share their reasoning, and connect math to other content areas.  (Examples of assessment items on the new state test, the WASL, can be found on the Commission on Student Learning website.)  Tahoma's previous math curriculum focused primarily on computation including algebra, geometry, measurement, and probability and statistics.  Now these important areas of math will be taught each year in the integrated approach, but linked to problem solving.

At the secondary level, students are encouraged to remain in math classes for more years than the minimum graduation requirements outline.  We understand that the jobs in a technological society require more mathematical reasoning, and we want our students to be prepared for many career options by sticking with their math program throughout high school.

Please consult the secondary course description catalogs to know which math classes are most appropriate for your student.  The teachers are developing core math assessments to monitor student progress over the course of the school year.  These assessments will also assist with yearly math placements.
