Newsweek rates Tahoma High School in nation’s top 5%

For the second consecutive year, Tahoma High School is ranked among the top 5 percent of public high schools in the United States by Newsweek magazine.

The ranking, which lists Tahoma as No. 1,145 out of 1,500 schools, is a measure of how many students at each school take Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or Cambridge tests. That number is then divided by the number of graduating seniors to obtain a ranking. Tahoma High School has experienced a steady increase in the number of students who participate in AP classes. This year’s ranking is 277 places higher on the list than last year.

Baseball field name honors Ivan Gingrich

Longtime Tahoma maintenance employee Ivan Gingrich was honored by his Tahoma peers July 20, when a baseball field at Cedar River Middle School was named for him.

More than 100 people turned out to celebrate the dedication of Ivan Gingrich Field. Gingrich, who is on medical leave battling cancer, received a Tahoma baseball jersey from district Athletic Director Tony Davis and a hat from Financial Services Director Lori Cloud that was embroidered with the words "Gingrich Field." Cloud purchased more than a dozen hats and handed them out to some of the ceremony participants. Superintendent Mike Maryanski and Maintenance Supervisor Bob Schuler each shared a few stories about Gingrich, sprinkled with humor and praise for Gingrich's service to the school district. Davis and Cedar River teacher Craig Jones, who was instrumental in organizing the tribute, also spoke about Gingrich's dedication to maintaining athletic fields and facilities for Tahoma students.
