Krause chosen as National PE teacher of Year

Tahoma High School teacher Tracy Krause is being honored as the National High School PE Teacher of the Year.

Krause was selected from a field of six regional teachers of the year chosen by the National Association for Sport and Physical Education. The announcement came at the association’s annual Hall of Fame banquet, held in Fort Worth, Texas on April 11.

Krause is a leader in changing Tahoma High School’s PE program to focus on wellness and lifelong physical activity. He also helped establish the popular Outdoor Academy program for 10th-grade students, which combines outdoor activities such as hiking, fly fishing and cycling with language arts and science curriculum.

“The improvement of student learning and the development of graduates who are going to be physically active for a lifetime has been our goal,” he said. “I am proud to say that we have a creative and varied program that is leading Tahoma students in that direction.”

Krause has taught at Tahoma High School for 15 years. He is a graduate of Washington State University and received his master’s degree from City University. He also has earned national teacher certification and was honored as state PE teacher of the year in 2005.
