The Humanities Program

The Tahoma School District offers a Language Arts/Social Studies  Humanities Block at grades 7 and 8 to better meet the needs of academically talented middle school students.  The curriculum builds on the basic skills taught in the core program and accelerates learning through more advanced literacy study including vocabulary development, research papers, and more sophisticated reading.   Students participate in the "We the People" program, an exploration of constitutional rights and responsibilities that culminates at the high school level in a national competition.  The Humanities block incorporates higher level thinking skill, opportunities for creative expression, and student projects.  A major difference is that the pace of learning is more rapid than in the core block classes.

Selection criteria and weights for this program are as follows:

A selection matrix is completed for each nominated student and a selection index is calculated.  Parents are notified of placement for their child in May of the proceeding school year.  For more information, please contact the counselors at Cedar River (425-413-5400) or Tahoma Junior High (425-413-5600).
