Outdoor Science Sites
and Grade Level Uses
Areas around each school in the Tahoma School District have been designated for environmental research and instruction. These areas include wetlands, forests, and streams and are usually within walking distance of each school. Teachers use these outdoor education sites while working toward implementation of the Field Experiences component of the science curriculum. The use of these outdoor sites for the different grade levels is summarized as follows:
Kindergarten
Introductory activities with environmental content (leaf prints, crafts, etc.)
Lessons featuring plants and animals
Grade 1
Be introduced to environmental site by physically walking through site
Use observation thinking skills
Habitats lessons
Grade 2
Site visit with 6th grade "Stewards"
Rocks and minerals lessons
Compare and contrast forests (temperate/rainforest)
Introduction to local flora and fauna
Grade 3
Site visit(s)
Watershed concepts are taught
Personal health/human body connections
Grade 4
Begin to identify names of 5-8 local plants and trees
Community contributor focus (demonstrating stewardship: cleaning up site, etc.)
Maintain site
Grade 5
Identify local plants/trees
"Steward in Training" apprenticeship (Fifth grade students serve as apprentices with sixth graders)
