Glossary of Terms: Science
Scientific Inquiry:

conducting investigations, using data to construct reasonable
explanations, modeling, and communication of results.
Student-Directed Investigations:
Investigations that the student designs and conducts in order to find
answers to questions about objects, organisms, and events in the environment.
Scientific Journals:

classroom learning.
Outdoor Classroom Sites:
Areas around each school that have been designated for environmental
research and instruction. These areas include wetland, forest, and
streams and are usually within walking distance of each school.
Inquiry Continuum:
A continuum of instructional approaches from teacher-directed
presentations focusing on content and concepts to student-directed
investigations where the teacher creates conditions that support students
constructing an understanding of content and concepts. Our goal is
to move along the continuum away from a "Stand and Deliver"
model to a student-centered model with the teacher as a facilitator of
learning. This goal is supported by district vision and state
EALRs.
