EALR #1: The student writes clearly and effectively.

1.1 Develop concept and design

  • Communicates meaning with pictures, supported by words.
  • Uses drawings that show attention to detail.
  • Develops connected ideas with words and pictures.
  • Attempts to sequence ideas in logical order.
  • Attempts to create a beginning.
  • Consistently writes left to right.
  • Chooses own topic.

1.2 Use style appropriate to audience and purpose

  • Communicates emotion through pictures or words (voice).
  • Strings words together.
  • Forms simple sentences.
  • Draws and writes to express individual style.
  • Uses words correctly.
  • Uses repetition and word patterns.
  • Writes to tell, using minimal descriptive words.

1.3 Apply writing conventions

  • Writes word strings.
  • Uses end punctuation correctly.
  • Attempts use of capitalization.
  • Uses sounds to spell words.
  • Develops core of correctly spelled words.
  • Uses correct manuscript letter formation and legible handwriting.
  • Introduce and identify naming words, describing words, action words (classifying, sorting)
EALR #2: The student writes in a variety of forms for different audiences and purposes.

2.1 Write for different audiences

  • Writes for self or other personally known audience.

2.2 Write for different purposes

  • Writes for different purposes, including:
    • to tell a story or imagine
    • to tell about personal experiences
    • to explain
    • to communicate feelings

2.3 Write in a variety of forms

  • Authors a variety of modes and genres:
    • narrative
    • journals
    • learning logs
    • friendly notes
    • pattern poetry

2.4 Write for career applications

 
EALR #3: The student understands and uses the steps of the writing process.

3.1 Prewrite

  • Brainstorms orally/discuss.
  • Observes and uses sensory exploration.
  • Draws.
  • Uses webs/clusters.
  • Uses lists/word bank.

3.2 Draft

  • Uses sounds to spell words.
  • Uses simplified version of beginning, middle and end.
  • Forms words and strings words together.
  • Forms simple sentences.

3.3 Revise

  • Adds words or information.
  • Oral sharing/response.

3.4 Edit

  • Corrects errors in spelling and punctuation with assistance.
  • Adds missing/necessary words.

3.5 Publish

  • Selects publishing form (book, poster, brochure, etc.).
  • Produces a legible, final product.
  • Uses technology when needed.
EALR #4: The student analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of written work.

4.1 Assess own strengths and needs for improvement

  • Identifies own growth in writing over time.
  • Identifies qualities of effective writing by exploring the works of other authors.
  • Sets goals for own writing with leader prompting.

4.2 Seek and offer feedback

  • Listens to the writing of peers and responds with comments or questions related to the meaning.
