Kindergarten Mathematics Continuum

EALR #1: The student understands and applies the concepts and procedures of mathematics.
1.1 Number Sense
  • Counts to 110+ from any number.
  • Counts backwards from 20.
  • Counts sets of objects to 20.
  • Matches objects to numbers to 20.
  • Counts by 10’s, 5’s, to 100 and 2’s to 30.
  • Uses objects to show + and – (objects less than 5).
  • Uses +, -, and = with number stories up to 5.
  • Recognizes numbers to 115.
  • Reads and writes 2-digit numbers.
  • Explores fractions ½ and ¼ .
  • Estimates the number of objects in a set less than 10.
  • Uses comparative language to describe estimates (more than, less than).
1.2 Measurement
  • Uses comparative language to compare objects (length, mass) (longer, shorter, etc.).
  • Measures with non-standard units (mass, volume and length).
  • Explores standard measurement tools (rulers, templates).
  • Measures to nearest inch.
  • Makes picture timeline.
  • Tells time to hour.
  • Explores money:  1¢, 5¢, 10¢, 25¢, $1.00.
  • Recognizes and writes ¢ sign.
  • Explores equivalencies of coins:
    • 5 pennies = 1 nickel
    • 2 nickels = 1 dime
    • 10 dimes = $1.00
1.3 Geometric Sense
  • Recognizes shapes:  circle, square, triangle, rhombus, hexagon.
  • Explores 3-D shapes connected to real world (ball, etc.).
  • Explores symmetry using objects and pictures.
  • Estimates the surface of an area by covering it with objects.
1.4 Probability and Statistics
  • Uses concrete and picture models to create graphs.
  • Gives example of certain and uncertain events.
  • Uses tally marks to show data.
1.5 Algebraic Sense
  • Creates patterns using 2-part and 3-part pattern with objects.
  • Sorts objects using 2 attributes.
  • Identifies missing number in a sequence of numbers.
EALR #2: The student uses mathematics to define and solve problems.
2.1 Investigate Situations
  • Recognizes and locates patterns in familiar situations.
  • Explores problem-solving strategies.
2.2 Formulate Questions
  • Identifies questions to be answered in familiar situations (i.e. situations they have encountered before).
2.3 Construct Solutions
  • Organizes information to solve a problem.
  • Contributes to group efforts in finding solutions.
EALR #3: The student uses mathematical reasoning.
3.1 Analyze Information
  • Supports thinking with pictures or models.
3.2 Predict and Infer
  • Predicts results based on data collection.
3.3 Draw Conclusions and Verify
  • Discusses results.

EALR #4: The student communicates knowledge and understanding in both everyday and mathematical language.

4.1 Gather Information
  • Collects mathematical information.
4.2 Organize and Interpret
  • Discusses information gathered.
4.3 Represent and Share
  • Uses models and/or pictures to explain ideas.
EALR #5: The student understands how mathematical ideas connect to other subject areas and real-life situations.
5.1 Relate Concepts and Procedures Within Mathematics
  • Recognizes equivalency in sets.
5.2 Relate concepts and Procedures to Other Disciplines
  • Recognizes mathematical patterns in familiar settings (finds floor patterns, clothing patterns).
5.3 Relate Concepts and Procedures to Real-Life
  • Uses mathematics in everyday situations (birthday graphs, address, telephone number).
