The Tahoma Arts Summit was open to all and was promoted throughout the schools and community via news articles, flyers, word of mouth, and the community center reader board. 

History of the Arts Initiative in Tahoma School District:

    January 1999 – 1^st Arts Summit held at TSD Central Services Center

80+ participants representing music, drama, visual arts, media arts, and dance convened to build a strategic arts initiative for TSD, naming goals and activities that would enable the Arts to become a more integral part of our schools and community.

     February – March 1999 – Arts Action Team (representative membership from summit) took all the Arts Summit input and wrote this into a Strategic Arts Initiative – which included a vision statement, four overarching goals that encompass all areas of the arts, and then action plans for each arts discipline.

     March 1999 – present – TSD Arts Advisory Committee (representative membership from the summit) meets regularly to oversee the working of the TSD Arts Initiative.

     September 1999 – Arts Reception/Progress Report meeting for TSD Arts Staff.

    January 2000 – 2^nd Annual Arts Visioning Summit to focus on the top proposal that came from the 1999 Arts Summit – to build a performing arts center to showcase the Arts in our schools and in the greater Maple Valley Community.  Angela Ramsey, Tahoma Arts Coordinator,  facilitated the evening’s visioning activities with presentations by:

• Mike Maryanski, Tahoma Schools Superintendent, welcomed participants and shared the importance of Arts in our Schools.
• Mary Jane Glaser, President of Maple Valley Creative Arts Council,  and member of Tahoma School District Board of Directors, shared her passion and drive for creating a quality Performing Arts Center which would spotlight local talent of students and citizens in the Greater Maple Valley Community, while also bringing professional artists to Maple Valley.
• Gina May, Arts Education Director, Office of Superintendent Public Instruction, shared the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements in the area of the Arts and endorsed the importance of the Summit’s work for quality Arts Education Programming in the schools and greater community.
• Dale Brookie and Associates with Northwest Architecture Firm, Seattle, presented a Power Point demonstration featuring a variety of Washington State Performing Arts Center Facilities his company has designed, enabling participants to better vision just what a Performing Arts Center in our schools/community might look like.

 Participants provided the following input as to how such a facility might be used 365 days a year by our schools and community.  In addition, key questions generated a large volume of responses. 

 The final Summit activity allowed small focus teams to identify “next steps” in the process of obtaining a Performing Arts Center for our Schools and Community.

• In what ways might we actively engage the Greater Maple Valley Community as stakeholders?

• How else might funds be raised for such a Performing Arts Center?

• Why not just fix up the Auditorium/stage we have at the Tahoma Junior High?
