History of the Arts Initiative in Tahoma School District:

January 1999 – 1st Arts Summit held at TSD Central Services Center

80+ participants representing music, drama, visual arts, media arts, and dance convened to build a strategic arts initiative for TSD, naming goals and activities that would enable the Arts to become a more integral part of our schools and community.

February – March 1999 – Arts Action Team (representative membership from summit) took all the Arts Summit input and wrote this into a Strategic Arts Initiative – which included a vision statement, four overarching goals that encompass all areas of the arts, and then action plans for each arts discipline.

March 1999 – present – TSD Arts Advisory Committee (representative membership from the summit) meets regularly to oversee the working of the TSD Arts Initiative.

September 1999 – Arts Reception/Progress Report meeting for TSD Arts Staff.

January 2000 – 2nd Annual Arts Visioning Summit to focus on the top proposal that came from the 1999 Arts Summit – to build a performing arts center to showcase the Arts in our schools and in the greater Maple Valley Community.  Angela Ramsey, Tahoma Arts Coordinator,  facilitated the evening’s visioning activities with presentations by:

Participants provided the following input as to how such a facility might be used 365 days a year by our schools and community.  In addition, key questions generated a large volume of responses.

The final Summit activity allowed small focus teams to identify next steps in the process of obtaining a Performing Arts Center for our Schools and Community.
