Essential Academic Learning Requirements
aka EALRs

EALRs (pronounced "eelers") is a term parents will be hearing often when they speak to their child's teachers at conference time.  The term EALRs is an acronym for Essential Academic Learning Requirements.  EALRs are the result of efforts that began in 1993 to improve education standards in Washington state.  EALRs were created by the State Commission on Student Learning to define expectations for student achievement in eight academic areas.  These areas are:

The Tahoma School District is aligning its curriculum with the EALRs to support students in their ability to attain the Certificate of Academic Achievement at Grade 10. The state tests students on the EALRs at grades 4, 7, and 10.  In this effort, the district has defined specific Grade Level EALRs (or Grade Level Basic Skills) and Integrated Units in order to meet the state requirements.  In addition, we have developed reading, writing, and mathematics continuums for elementary and secondary students.

Students will be tested on these EALRs using the new Washington Assessments of Student Learning (WASL).  These tests are designed to assess whether or not students are achieving the state EALRs. In 1997-1998, fourth graders and seventh graders took the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL).  The school year 2003-2004, will be the first year that tenth grade students will be required to take the Certificate of Mastery.

For more information on these tests, see the Tahoma Teaching and Learning page on the WASL, the State Commission on Student Learning website, or the test scores as reported on the Standards and Assessments page.
