Successful Academics Independent Living

SAIL K-3   Brandi Hill
SAIL 3-5    Angelina Perkes

The Successful Academics Independent Living special education program is a district program housed at Lake Wilderness Elementary School. This program provides the most restrictive in-district placement, individualized programs for all academic learning (reading, math, and written language), adaptive/social skills, and life skills. These classrooms offer a higher ratio of teacher and para-educator support than in other special education programs. Many students transition into SAIL from the district special education Preschool program. These students have been identified from age three with significant cognitive and/or physical delays. When able, SAIL students are integrated into general education classrooms for introduction to academic experiences and contact with age appropriate peer groups. Non-academic learning experiences include library, music, PE, assemblies, field trips, and enrichment opportunities. At the Kindergarten level, some BELS students are placed in the integrated classroom with additional support. In this program, students develop and strengthen skills through observations and interactions with peers. All of the children develop understanding and empathy for a wide range of individual differences in their classmates.
