Note to Parents

Your daughter has made a Tahoma Volleyball Team.  There are a few things you could do to help the success of her team.

  1. Please do not schedule any doctor/dentist appointments during practice time.  Obviously emergencies would take precedence over this, but if you would check the practice and game schedules it would be appreciated.

  1. A major concern of all parents is the amount of playing time their daughter gets.  Playing time, team strategies, and play calling are all topics that would be difficult for a coach to talk about to a parent.  All of the coaches would gladly explain why they rotate players the way they do and explain the areas of improvement your daughter could work on.  Please have you daughter approach her coach to discuss any of these topics.

  1. Time:  Volleyball is a large commitment of time.  Between the regular season, camps, and Club volleyball, it seems like the season never really ends.  All the coaches at Tahoma appreciate the time our parents spend in supporting our program.  Thank You!

  1. Varsity sports are highly competitive.  While it is our desire to play as many players as possible, the best players at their positions will play in the varsity games.  Our coaching staff believes that junior varsity and C level games are part of a player’s development and will make efforts to rotate all players into these contests.

  1. Both parenting and coaching are extremely difficult vocations.  By establishing an understanding of each position, we are better able to accept the actions of the other and provide greater benefit to children.

The Tahoma Volleyball Team members and their parents are subject to the following policies during the course of our season.

Policy:  The South Puget Sound League (SPSL), states that any and all games beginning after 5:15p are games in which admission must be charged.

  * There are family passes available by calling the main office at THS.

  (425)413-6302

Policy:  The Tahoma School District does not provide transportation to Kent school events that begin after 5pm.

Policy:  In order to develop our JV and Freshmen team players, we believe it is very important for them to stay and watch the Varsity matches. At this time, some players will have specific duties assigned to them while others will be able to sit and watch. Athletes are allotted two times for not staying! It is the athletes choice as to which times she will not be staying. After that there are consequences in place with each coach for missed games.

Coaching Philosophy

The true value of high school volleyball can be defined in my opinion as an educational support program that is designed to help develop tomorrow’s community leaders.  The experiences and values that players in this volleyball program can take away from their high school team will enable them to be strong leaders, parents, co-workers, and spouses.

Academic excellence is our focus for each athlete.  We also believe that regardless of your role on our team we have the same expectations of work ethic and the same level of commitment for each player.

Our focus for volleyball is relentless pursuit of the ball defensively, never giving up on a ball, and never giving up on a game.  No matter what the score is, you always continue to work hard.

As a coaching staff we have set forth clear behavioral standards for our athletes and we ask that as parents, you will assist us in holding our athletes accountable both on and off the court.  We are very proud of what Tahoma volleyball is becoming.

As the head coach of the Tahoma volleyball program I want to provide athletes with lifetime memories and positive athletic traditions.  I will surround my athletes with great people/coaches and I will build relationships with players trying to help them pursue their dreams of playing in college and continuing their education.  I am looking beyond the day in my athlete’s lives and I am thinking beyond success to significance.

 Volleyball

Parents and Prospective volleyball players:

Summer is ending and that means that fall is approaching along with the start of school and the great sport of volleyball.  As Tahoma volleyball coaches, we approach this time of year with great anticipation and enthusiasm.  This enthusiasm is dampered somewhat by the most difficult part of the job: cutting the squad down to its final numbers.  Tahoma volleyball offers freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams.

While it is difficult to explain this very complex and in-depth process, we would like to share the factors on which our decisions are based every year.

Academics:Is the athlete in compliance with the WIAA and school district

requirements for academics and attendance?

Coachability:Is the athlete capable of growing as a player every day

because she has the desire to achieve more every day?

Character: Is the athlete the kind of person we want to represent our high

school and our volleyball program?  Has she given us reason to

question her morality or integrity?

Growth Potential:  Is the athlete developing physically and athletically?  In

short, is she on the way up, standing in place, or on her

  way down?

Team Need: Does the athlete and her talents fit the larger team puzzle?

Talent:Does the athlete posses special ability and athleticism?

Year in School:  What role will the athlete play in the future?  Seniors generally

need to be starters on the varsity, juniors need to “fit in the

overall picture” or be leaders on the junior varsity, sophomores

have the flexibility to be either varsity or junior varsity, and

freshman have the flexibility to be on a freshman team, or junior

 varsity or varsity.

There are number of fine volleyball players cut from this program every year, and it is truly a shame that more opportunities aren’t available within our district.  This will only be the end of your participation in this life sport if you choose to quit volleyball on your own!

Decisions will be made by a very experienced staff of four or more coaches.  The cuts will be posted the third morning of tryouts.  As an athlete, you have honored us, yourself, and the game of volleyball by turning out.  Good Luck to all of you!!
