About Us and Our Program

Our Philosophy and Goal

Our goal is to provide the highest quality in music education to our students.  We also hope to foster life long learning through music performance and instruction.  We know that music can enrich everyone’s life and we strive to make it an important aspect of all our student’s education and life.

Congratulations!  Your student has expressed an interest in the Tahoma School Districts Band program!   Your student has had an opportunity to explore/try the instruments that we begin fifth grade students playing.

Getting Started:  Step One:  Understanding the Commitment

                           Step Two:  Selecting an Instrument

Step Three: Getting the materials and information

Step Four:   Come to band and enjoying the music for the rest of your life.

Understanding the Commitment

Students will commit to attending rehearsals, learning their music, and attending public performances.

·                      Rehearsals is where learning takes place.  Without this part of the commitment, the young musician is going nowhere.

·                      Students must be dedicated to learning to read music, as well as accept instruction on playing their instrument. Please See Levels of Achievement.

·                      Public Performances are a part of the music experience that develops musicianship.

Getting Materials and Information

After your child obtains an instrument, you will need a music stand for home practice, and a matching book that is used by all of our band students, “Accent on Achievement, Book I” for the instrument you are chosen (Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, or Baritone Horn in Bass Clef).

For concerts:  Students will need a white dress shirt, black pants or dress (except girls who play the Clarinet should not wear dresses), dark socks, and black shoes.  We would suggest that you shop around at second hand store or other retailers.

The Above are the choices for Beginning 5th grades student have.  We do not offer the piano, guitar, stringed instruments (Violin, Viola, Cello, or Bass) or bass guitar.  For the Concert Band, these are not instruments that are scored.

We have changed the policy on drums so that students will have the opportunity to learn to read music notation instead of just rhythms.  As the year progresses, we will allow students to move towards percussion.

We will not offer percussion during the 5th grade year until the student has completed the first quarter of band with another instrument.

We do not offer saxophone unless by permission of the band directors.  We recommend starting on the clarinet or flute prior to learning the saxophone.
